In Ukraine Putin’s best friend is accused of high treason and separatism

The cause was Mr. Medvedchuk’s statement concerning the possibility of autonomy for Donbass.

Press-the Secretary of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Larisa Sargan reported on Facebook that the Prosecutor General’s office of Ukraine initiated criminal proceedings on Victor Medvedchuk on the subject of possible treason on charges of separatism.

The proceeding was initiated by the appeal of the People’s Deputy of the “People’s Front” party Andrei Teteryuk.

“The leader of the pro-Russian organization “Ukrainian choice – the right of the people” and the head of the Political Council of the “Opposition platform – for life” party Viktor Medvedchuk made a loud statement at the party congress on January 29, 2019 in Kiev, stating the need to establish the so-called “Autonomous region of Donbass” with its own parliament and government, as well as the legal recognition of this status in the Constitution of Ukraine”, – Sargan wrote.

She also stated that Medvedchuk’s “plan” envisages the creation of an “Autonomous region of Donbas” as part of the Ukrainian state, and the agreements should be held in the “quadrangle Kiev-Donetsk-Lugansk-Moscow”.

The Prosecutor General’s office stressed that the Constitution defines Ukraine as the unitary state, while Russian support of the insurgency in Donbass is an act of aggression. In such a context, any calls for the creation of an “Autonomous region” may be contributed to the subversive activities of the Russian Federation.

Under such circumstances, the actions of Medvedchuk suspected signs of crimes under part 1 of article 110 of the criminal code (infringement of territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine) and part 1 of article 111 of the criminal code of Ukraine (high treason).

“In this particular case, appeals to change the territorial borders of Ukraine have been proclaimed and at the same time the Russian Federation is assisted in carrying out subversive activities against Ukraine, aggressive activities and separatist sentiments are supported,” the Press Secretary of the Prosecutor General explained.

Materials of criminal proceedings will be transferred to the Security service under investigation.
