“I was conned like a schmuck”? Yanukovich accused signatory countries in the Ukrainian crisis

The former Ukrainian president also boasted about his freedom of movement inside Russia.

On Wednesday, February 6, former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, who was sentenced in absentia to 13 years in prison for high treason, is holding a press conference in Moscow.

In his speech, he stated that the signatories of the 2014 agreement on resolving the crisis in Ukraine are not responding to his letters and remain responsible for the failure of the agreement.

According to Mr. Yanukovich, back in 2014, he believed that the agreement would be implemented.

“I did not believe that the signatory countries would discredit themselves so. (I thought – ed.) that everything we will sign shall be carried out on both sides, including the responsibility of the signatory countries. But I was wrong” said Mr. Yanukovich.

“How can this be called? I was deceived? Betrayed? Or, as so-called advanced Ukrainian politicians today claim, they “conned me like a schmuck”? How?”- Yanukovych said as if asking a rhetorical question.

According to the ex-President, the responsibility still lies with the all of signatories.

“I would like to be answered in public. I’ve addressed them many times in many years during the press conference and by writing them letters, and I still haven’t received any answer from these countries” Yanukovych said.

He also stated that he is free to travel inside Russian territory.

“I can travel to any country in the world. I have no problems,” he said.

It should be reminded that in February 2014, an agreement on resolving the crisis in Ukraine was signed by Viktor Yanukovych as representative of acting authorities, Vitaliy Klitschko, Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Oleg Tyagnibok as representatives of protesting opposition. It was also signed by German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Head of the Continental Europe Department, French Foreign Ministry Eric Fournier, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.
