Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un will meet again in Vietnam

Leaders of the United States and the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea will hold their second meeting in Vietnam at the end of February

US president Donald Trump has confirmed his second meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un which will take place in Hanoi or Da Nang. During his State of the Union address to US Congress, Mr. Trump was eager to announce his desire to “continue our historic push for peace on the Korean peninsula”.

According to president Trump, it was his personal achievement that a major nuclear crisis was resolved in a peaceful manner. “If I had not been elected president of the United States, we would right now… be in a major war with North Korea,” Mr. Trump claimed.

Though in reality, the Korean crisis is far from over, certain progress was definitely made since Trump and Kim first met in Singapore back in June of 2018. North Korea put its nuclear and missile tests on halt and even released US hostages. For its part, the US refrained from taking part in major joint exercises with South Korea.

Critics of president Trump claim that no real steps in dismantling North Korean nuclear program was made and Kim Jong-un is playing his American adversary for a fool and buying more time to complete the uranium enrichment and construct more rockets. In his recent report to the Congress US director of national intelligence, Daniel Coats claimed that Kim Jong-un is “unlikely to give up” his nuclear weapons because he sees them as “critical to regime survival”.

Whatever the circumstances surrounding the Korean nuclear crisis may be, meeting in Vietnam this February will be historically significant anyway since president Trump is also expected to meet China’s leader, Xi Jinping. Both leaders expressed hope that a trade deal may be finalized before the 1 March to prevent the seemingly imminent trade war between USA and China.
